Preparations for a Sustainable Restart in Sydvaranger
Ahead of the restart of Sydvaranger, we are mapping the plant and animal life in the areas surrounding the mine. This gives us good knowledge of the current state of nature and allows us to minimise the impact of future operations.
Presentation Q3 2025

How will the water around Sydvaranger be affected when the mine resumes operations? This is one of the questions that the consulting firm Geosyntec is helping Grangex answer. Analyses, training, and updated monitoring programs will help ensure that environmental impact is kept under control and that the mine can be operated sustainably and over the long term.

Sydvaranger mine

In Norwegian Finnmark lies Sydvaranger. The mine is the third-largest iron ore mine in the Nordic region, with its operations currently dormant and a planned restart in 2027. In preparation for the restart, GRANGEX will implement processes to improve the mine’s product quality, which will make Sydvaranger a significant supplier in the value chain for the steel industry’s green transition.

Dannemora vinter 3

Dannemora mine

In northern Uppland, Sweden, lies Dannemora – a mine with long history and rich iron resources beneath the surface. In preparation for GRANGEX’s planned restart of Dannemora, the mine’s production processes will be upgraded. The result will be an improved product quality, allowing Dannemora to become an important part of the value chain for the steel industry’s transition to production with minimal carbon dioxide emissions.

Grängesberg

In the recycling of apatite in Grängesberg, the tailings from the iron ore beneficiation at the closed Grängesberg mine will be processed. The byproduct can be used to produce highly enriched apatite. The phosphate mineral apatite is a critical mineral according to the EU’s Critical Raw Materials Act.
